![]() I'm not an expert but my mother was a tailor so I grew up tinkering on old school brother, singer, and used a Bernina in school. It was just as good as a serger except that it didn't trim away excess and was also super slow lol. I didn't have a serger until recently, so I used one of its specialty feet to create an overlock on my seams to keep woven fabrics locked. It also has the pedal-free option, have to use it when doing automatic button holes. The feed dogs can be dropped and it has an auto thread cutter, perhaps my favorite humblest feature. It can do letters and has hundreds of embroidery stitches as well as stitch customization options to create patterns. I got a good package deal on it from amazon so it came with almost all possible feet and a quilting extension. Semi computerized and steel interior (I wanted something hefty, tho it's easy to carry one or handed). Even though it is also a few years old, it's solid and has a lot of tutorials and help technique videos out there. I have a singer 9960, I've had it only since April but I love it.
